OMEGA360 4D_VS Disruptive Ubiquitous Multi-Domain Radar

Fincantieri NexTech S.p.a., part of Fincantieri Group, successfully completed the trials of its new Omega360 4D_VS (Volume Surveillance) radar at the Ufficio Tecnico Territoriale Armamenti Terrestri – UTTAT Firing Range in Nettuno (Rome) in May 2022. The aim of this trial session, the last of a series started in February 2022, was to verify the results of recent software upgrades implemented to improve mini and micro drone classification.
Omega360 4D_VS (Volume Surveillance), designed and developed at the Fincantieri NexTech Laboratory in Rome, has been developed starting from the Omega360 3D_SS (Surface Surveillance) presented last year to the Italian Armed Forces and SEGREDIFESA. It is a 4D multimode software-defined surveillance radar operating in X-Band, capable of facing the most demanding aerial and surface threats in all symmetric and asymmetric warfare and security scenarios.
The radar features an innovative and unique ubiquitous architecture, with 4 independent transmission antennas and 192 receiving antennas, able to guarantee a simultaneous and continuous 360 degrees azimuth coverage and more than 60 degrees elevation coverage.
Thanks to a long dwell time and a very selective doppler filtering, Omega360 4D_VS creates a detailed range-doppler map resulting in unrivalled detection, tracking and classification of both slow and fast targets with reduced Radar Cross Section (mini/micro UAV, USV, fast manoeuvring boats, submarine periscopes, small vehicles, pedestrians, etc), even in a very congested and cluttered environment, providing an unprecedented short/medium range multi-domain situational awareness.
As a software-defined radar, Omega360 4D_VS is a versatile and scalable sensor, offering an intrinsic capability to add further features to meet current and future progressive End User’s requirements, the possibility to create new operational modes and to increase functionalities with additional software applications.
Parallelism and modularity as well as the extensive use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components and the ubiquitous architecture make Omega360 4D_VS very robust and reliable, with a high operational availability (low Life Cycle Cost), and render it suitable for ground-based, mobile and naval applications.
